Yushu Huaide Aid School Survived the Quake

In the Yushu 4.14 Earthquake, almost all civil buildings around Qinghai’s Yushu Huaide Aid School were collapsed, but the Huaide School survived the earthquake, so did the 105 children in the school. The story interested the reporter of Qianjiang Daily who was reporting in the quake area. The following is the report in respect of the Huaide School:

In Yushu’s quake area, nothing concerns people more than children’s death & injury. These children’s smiles are the most touching of all.

Yesterday, In Jiegu Township, the epicenter of the Yushu Earthquake, we saw orphans’ smiling faces blossoming brightly.

No child was injured: cooking smoke is curling up from the tent welfare institute

At 18:00 yesterday afternoon, a scene took place in front of five blue relief tents at the Yushu Racecourse. A group of Tibetan children aged 6 to 10-plus were happily transporting foodstuffs (like instant noodle and mineral water) from an SUV, near which a boiler of congee was boiling, a vein of smoke rising up into the air.

“My name is Qiulin Yongzhou” a 13-year-old boy borrowed the reporter’s pen to write down his name on the interview manuscript. The boy had just transported a box of instant noodles from the SUV. After shyly taking the reporter’s candies, he handed some candies to the two children nearby before gladly eating his own.

After transporting relief materials from the SUV, children inhaled deeply with their red noses, and took off their shoes before entering the tents. In one tent the reporter saw dozens of children lying or sitting, and gave them some candies. The children examined the reporter curiously, but still took the candies offered and ate them with a smile. One 6-year-old boy sat fiddling with the candy, unsure of how to unwrap it.

These children are students of Yushu Huaide Aid School. Opposite the racecourse one can find the 3-floor welfare institute standing amongst the ruins. Almost all civil buildings around Huaide Aid School were collapsed in the Yushu earthquake, but the school still survived, as well as the 105 children.

Bairi Daile, dean of Huaide Aid School, has a black face and honest smile; he said: ”This is the greatest comfort in my heart.”

The dean serves as a supervisor: Housing service life must be at least several decades.

When the earthquake took place, Bairi Daile was sleeping. At 5:00 a.m., before the earthquake there was a pre-quake. He and teachers gathered the children and dressed them. After a long while, there were no other abnormal conditions, so the children had breakfast and did some cleaning as usual. Some children went to elementary school. Lying in bed, Bairi Daile fell asleep once again, but a rampant shake awakened him. Shoeless, he immediately ran out from his room at the second floor, where he found all children downstairs in the playground. He hurriedly counted the children: all of them were here! His heart could finally rest. He told the children that they must stay on the ground and not move. Afterwards, he and other teachers hurried to save two people from ruined buildings where they heard voices amongst the rubble.

One hour later, the dust and fumes gradually dispersed; he and several older children rushed into the building to transport some quilts out. After that he directed the children to walk single file to the open racecourse and sit down, after which he left to find food for them.

He received instant noodles and mineral water from a kindhearted boss, so one day’s foodstuffs for children was accounted for. He informed the children’s relatives to take their own children. In the end, 70 children without relatives were left. That night, he and the children slept on the grass.

The next day he went to the bureau of civil affairs to get 7 tents, but he saved two tents for neighboring residents. In the remaining 5 tents a temporary welfare institute was founded. Later, his relatives dispatched foodstuffs from a neighboring county, and one boss from Shanghai familiar with him also flew from Shanghai to Xining, after which he then drove for 16 hours to donate materials to Bairi.

Bairi Daile equipped every tent manager with a flashlight, and required that the tent manager manage other children at night. During the daytime, he organized self-study courses and reading materials for the children.

Huaide Aid Schoolwas founded in 2005, when Bairi Daile donated more than 1.40 million Yuan to build the 3-floor main building. “I planned to use the building for decades!” And he himself supervised the construction. Today, the fact that the building remains intact proves that his past decision was correct.

“I have made a commitment to my children: As long as I am alive, I will build up another, better welfare institute to save more children,” Bairi Daile said earnestly, surrounded by the voices of children reading in the tent.
